Drogheda is set to be treated to a feast of Irish music, song and language from 12th - 19th August 2018 when Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann comes to town. The festival will be opened by Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins on Sunday 12th August at 2.30pm. The countdown is on for a festival which celebrates our musical heritage, cultural heritage and the talented traditional Irish musicians taking part. The Fleadh is a massive tourist attraction with up to 400,000 visitors expected to visit Drogheda town to enjoy competitions, concerts, céilithe, outdoor gig rig, workshops, energetic performances and lively street music sessions. Make sure to get a copy of the Clár/Fleadh Programme (Designed and Printed by Anglo Printers) from the Fleadh Cheoil office, Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda Tourist Office and Dundalk Tourist Office.
The Scoil Éigse will see up to 900 Children attend masterclasses and workshops throughout the week of the Fleadh, which will cater for all traditional instruments, rince, amhranaíocht and comhra. Family entertainment will include fun days in the parks, street entertainment, family workshops, family gig rig sessions and family concerts.
The Fleadh brings some of Ireland's top traditional acts and performers/bands to a number of venues in Drogheda. The festival dome will be located in Dominic's Park and hosts RTÉ Concert Orchestra featuring soloist Zoë Conway and John McIntyre with special guests Bill Whelan, Donal Lunny and Mick O' Brien; Sean Keane will perform in Droichead Arts Centre; Téada with Séamus Begley showcase their talents in The Dominican Church; Hot House Flowers, Damian Dempsey, Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill with Voice Squad take to the stage in The Crescent Theatre; The Dominican Church sets the stage for Marbhna 1916 - Requiem. Michael Ó Súilleabhan brings The Carolan Celebration, suites composed by him for solo piano to St Peter's Church of Ireland in Drogheda. Many other top Irish acts are set to perform in concert throughout the Fleadh. The headline concerts are sure to be energetic, soulful and vibrant performances to their audiences.
A gig rig will be located at Bolton Square with a feast of free open-air entertainment of traditional music, Irish dancing and singing performances every day: from 2.30 - 5.30pm on Sunday 12th August, from 6pm to 9.45pm Monday 13th to Wednesday 15th August, from 3pm to 9.55pm on Thursday 16th August, from 12pm to 10.15pm on Friday 17th August, 12pm to 10.15pm on Saturday 18th August and 12pm to 11.00pm on Sunday 19th August. Get a taste of the Fleadh at the free informal music seisiuns at Laurence's gate from 12pm to 1pm every afternoon. Make sure to book for the Muintearas lunchtime concerts taking place in Droichead Arts Centre, which celebrate the talent of local traditional music families from Louth and surrounding counties. The Trisco or trad disco promises a great night of dancing in the Electric Ballroom on Friday 17th August from 11.30pm with trad music blended with dance beats. Visit the historical Millmount Cultural Quarter and enjoy an exhibition on traditional music, living history and local craft studios. Drogheda town has a lot to offer including a great variety of shops to welcoming pubs, fantastic restaurants and coffee shops.
